The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered
Low-end PC guide: FPS boost, lag and stutter fix

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered config file
Free. The download link appears after a short wait.
- Put it in
%USERPROFILE%\Documents\ My Games\ Oblivion Remastered\ Saved\ Config\ Windows - Engine
- Unreal Engine 5
Oblivion Remastered runs on Unreal Engine 5.3, and its Lumen ray tracing has no option to turn it off. Below you’ll find a free Engine.ini, the settings to change first and fixes for stutter on a weak PC.
Can you run Oblivion Remastered on a low end PC?
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600X or Intel Core i7-6800K
- GPU: AMD Radeon RX 5700 or Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 Ti
- RAM: 16 GB
- DirectX: 12
- OS: Windows 10 (21H1)
- Storage: 125 GB on an SSD
A PC below these specs will struggle, even with the config below. The config reduces what your GPU has to draw, but it can’t add the hardware you’re missing.
Best Oblivion Remastered settings for low end PCs
- Use the Low preset first, then change the items below.
- Upscaling: Pick FSR 3.1 or XeSS 1.3. Both work on any GPU. DLSS 3.7 needs an Nvidia RTX card.
- Ray tracing: The game has no option to turn it off. The config below turns off Lumen reflections and Lumen mesh tracing to cut that cost.
- Frame rate cap: Set it to 60. If your PC can’t hold 60, set it to 30.
- V-Sync: Turn it off. It locks your frame rate to your monitor’s refresh rate.
- Window mode: Pick borderless windowed.
Oblivion Remastered Engine.ini location and install
- Download the zip with the button above. Unzip it and find the
Engine.inifile. - Close the game completely.
- Press Windows + R, paste
%USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\Oblivion Remastered\Saved\Config\Windowsand press Enter. If the folder doesn’t exist, start the game once, close it and try again. - If the folder already holds an
Engine.ini, rename it toEngine.ini.bak. That copy is your backup. - Copy the new
Engine.iniinto the folder. - Start the game.

Last, the streaming settings turn on async loading and switch off forced garbage collection. That smooths loading and cuts hitches between areas.
How to fix Oblivion Remastered stuttering and FPS drops
Oblivion Remastered is an Unreal Engine 5 game, so the first launch compiles shaders. Let that finish, and expect hitches for the first few minutes.
The minimum storage is listed as an SSD, so install the game on one if you can.
Then work through the basics on Windows:
- Close background apps, such as browsers and overlays from launchers.
- Update your GPU driver from the official site: Nvidia, AMD or Intel.
- On a laptop, plug in the power cable and set the power mode to best performance.
Undo the changes
Delete Engine.ini from the folder. If you made a backup, rename Engine.ini.bak back to Engine.ini instead. The game rebuilds its defaults.
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered FAQ
Where is the Oblivion Remastered Engine.ini file?
Oblivion Remastered keeps it in %USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\Oblivion Remastered\Saved\Config\Windows. Press Windows + R, paste that path and press Enter. If the folder isn't there, start the game once, close it and check again.
Can Oblivion Remastered run on a low end PC?
Oblivion Remastered needs at least an AMD Radeon RX 5700 or Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 Ti, with 16 GB of RAM and an SSD. A PC below that will need the lowest settings and the config file, and it may still run poorly.
Which upscaler should I use on an older GPU in Oblivion Remastered?
Pick FSR 3.1 or XeSS 1.3. Both work on any GPU. Oblivion Remastered also offers DLSS 3.7, but that needs an Nvidia RTX card, so skip it on other GPUs.
How do I fix Oblivion Remastered stuttering and FPS drops?
Let the first launch finish, because the game compiles shaders and stutters for the first minutes. Install it on an SSD, close background apps, update your GPU driver and plug in your laptop.
Is it safe to undo the Oblivion Remastered Engine.ini changes?
Yes. Delete the Engine.ini file from the config folder, or rename your Engine.ini.bak backup back to Engine.ini. The game then rebuilds its defaults.
